A Great Beginners Guide to Creating a Whimsical Bird Picture

Writer's picture: Glory CreativeGlory Creative

I love to learn new skills and have been watching ALOT of Art videos! I just found one which was easy, fun and turned out cute. If you would like to create this whimsical bird and have fun doing it, this post is for you!

The most important thing to remember when creating art is to have fun doing it. I have had a tendency to be a bit of a perfectionist, but through art, I am learning to just enjoy the process. I know ahead of time, it will take time to develop skills and I need to look at what went well as well as what I would like to improve.

Let's get started!

All the supplies

First let's get together your supplies:

  • Pencil to sketch out bird

  • eraser

  • Watercolor paper

  • Water proof pen, you chose the width of the pen ( used fine and medium tip with Faber-Castell pens.

  • Optional: Black marker to darken in feet and part of tail feathers. I used a black Copic Marker. Make sure the marker you use is waterproof.

  • Water color paint in 3 to four colors. I used two shades of blue, a pink, and light yellow-green

  • cup of water for cleaning brush and a cup of clean water for paint.

  • Round paint brush. Just use a size you feel comfortable with.

  • Palette try for mixing paint or a dish.

  • Reference Bird

Steps to Draw Bird

  1. Find a picture of a reference bird to look at while drawing or you can use the reference drawing.

When drawing, think of the shapes you see. In drawing birds, they ae just an oval body,

a circle head, and a triangle wing. The legs are a little complicated, but only if you do it realistically. For our Whimsical bird it is just simple straight lines.

Look the basic shapes which make up this bird. Start out drawing these shapes.

2. Start out by sketching out the basic shapes of his body:

start with the head, it's just a simple egg shape. For this picture the head is larger than in real life, to help give it that whimsical look.

Now for the body:

Give it a little more character by making the back line straight and the belly rounded.

Next, add in the wing, but making it tiny and curved.

The tail is simplified as well and the feet are also smaller and less bulky.

But shorter feet tend to be cuter,

so I redo them into tiny feet that look like they're

walking because of their angles.

Here are two examples, the initial sketching of the real life bird and then the whimsical version.

Moving on to step three.

3. Ink them in with black waterproof pen, adding small details in the wing and tail

and making his beak and legs black for contrast.

Notice the rounded feather added to the top of his head for character if you wish. Once you get all the details inked in, it is time to paint.

4. Gather paint colors in palette keeping the colors light.

I used Thalo Crimson, Cobalt blue, Prussian blue and yellow pale

You can keep colors light by adding extra water to each color and mixing until you get the desired tint. I combined blue and yellow together to achieve the desired green tint.

Lay first color, apply loosely. Then next and then next allowing it to blend.

Third color

Make sure to color in tail.

The background is just a very light mix of color and water. Don't worry if colors bleed. This is a very loose piece. Then put colors of choice on your brush to flick it for the dots. I applied a bit of pink for some background area and to the cheeks of the bird.

Here is the first one I made.

Here are two different versions of the same bird and same colors. See how they are unique and different. You might want to try various color combinations for variety, too.

This is the second one. I was in a bit of a hurry and left it to dry. When I came back, I wasn't happy with a couple of splotchy places in the paint. Make sure you allow the paint to blend with the other colors and don't use too much water, otherwise it will dry splotchy.

I learn as much from my art mistakes as I do from my success. When I say successes, I mean pieces I am completely pleased with.

I would love to see your version. Please post pictures to share with other! If you have questions I would be happy to respond.

Blessings,

Melanie
