I love trifles! This year for my birthday, I decided I wanted a trifle for my birthday dessert. I found a recipe which sounded good, but I did a little bit of altering the recipe to lighten it up. I would like to share with you what I did to make it lighter.

Original Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cold whole milk

  • 1 cup sour cream

  • 1 package (3.4 ounces) instant vanilla pudding mix

  • 1 teaspoon grated orange zest

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream, whipped

  • 8 cups cubed angel food cake

  • 4 cups sliced fresh strawberries

Altered Recipe to lighten it up

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cold skim milk

  • 1 cup fat free sour cream

  • 1 package (1.8 ounces) sugar-free instant vanilla pudding mix

  • 1 teaspoon grated orange zest

  • 2 cups cool whip

  • 8 cups cubed angel food cake

  • 4 cups sliced fresh strawberries and blueberries

Directions

  • In a large bowl, beat the milk, fat free sour cream, sugar free pudding mix and orange zest on low speed until thickened. Fold in cool whip.

  • Place half of the cake cubes in a 3-qt. glass bowl. Arrange a third of the strawberries and blueberries around sides of bowl and over cake; top with half of the pudding mixture. Repeat layers once. Top with remaining berries. Refrigerate for 2 hours before serving

*optional top with cool whip or whipped cream prior to serving.
