For many years, I have wanted to organize my house to make everything flow better and to save time to find things. However, organizing and keeping it straight, has been difficult for me. I see others in my family who seem "naturally gifted" for organizing a home, but somehow the process and maintenance of organization has eluded me. If you can relate to this, comment and let me hear from you.

I love the look of the picture below.

Inspiration

A couple of years ago my husband installed a closet organization kit in our bedroom closet. He purchased it from Home Depot, ClosetMaid Impressions in dark cherry wood. Eureka, we "finally" found a "system" which was successful! This closet system gave us a sort of template of where everything should go. We have always said when trying to put things away, "I would put it up, but I don't know where it goes!" Have you ever said this?

Since then, we have managed to keep our closet in decent order, which has jumpstarted our resolve to organize other parts of our home..

Inspiration for Bathroom Update

When you find success , you will build momentum. This happed to us after the closet organizing success, so we decided to leap into updating one bathroom. Like most of us now days, we save money, then make a purchase. My husband and I have had several plans about updating spaces in our home, which included a bathroom update.. We saved money for our bathroom renovation plan, looked for sales and then went to town getting the materials and supplies. This is when the creative juices really started to flow. It was fun to plan and create an updated space!

My husband's inspiration for the bathroom was Tuscany. The inspiration for the theme came from a past trip to Italy. Did I mention, my husband is referred to in our home as "Martha Stewart"? He is our "chief" decorator in the house and all ideas go through him. I love to brainstorm with him to flesh through possibilities. He is also the guy who will execute all construction and installation of said projects and work with me on decorating. (My husband's website for projects will be coming soon).

Having a theme or inspiration facilitates the planning process as a kind of catalyst to get the ball rolling. His Tuscany theme was our inspiration point and ideas snowballed from there. As with any project, you have to plan a time to do it and research cost. Then comes the least fun part, tearing out the old bathroom cabinet and floor. It was quite chaotic for a time. But it was only temporary.

We originally planned on doing this project over Labor Day weekend, but as with many great plans, it ended up taking about three weeks from start to finish. When I say we, I mean my husband. I am the helper on this and my job was to help plan and organize everything before and after the project was done. He is the master builder and designer. I helped pick out, cabinets, tile faucets and paint. We agreed on the new light fixtures he chose and off to ordering and executing the remodel he went.

The Process

We kept our tub, because it is a deep soaking tub, however, we pulled out two vanities as our bathroom has two rooms. When you enter the first part from the kitchen, there is a toilet and vanity. Another door connects to the second part containing another vanity, a bathtub, linen closet, door to our bedroom and door to our walk-in closet.

With new vanities, faucets, towels, light fixtures, towel bars, one new framed mirror and a fresh color of paint, we created a stunning bathroom. We kept the old shower curtain which we still liked, bought a new rug, towels and bathroom basket set from Kohls . We kept some of our former vanity items, like toothbrush holders and tissue box, but added toilet cleaner canister, other vanity items and a new matching trash can. Tile replaced the old vinyl flooring which made this bathroom like something from a fancy hotel. We decided on tile flooring from Lowes. It was called Styles Collection Classico. (Unfortunately they no longer carry it). The tile really made the bathroom pop!

Organizing

I used organizers from Bed Bath and Beyond in the linen closet. My husband added a wooden shelf to give us more space for storage and recently, I found clear drawer organizers from Amazon for the vanity drawers and to use under the sink. Groupon has them, too.

DIY Tips

I haven't always been very good about throwing things away, but I am getting better. For items I can't part with, I brainstorm to find a way to repurpose them. See below how a miniature flower pot can be used to store hair clips.

Adding Artwork to the Walls

Photography has been a new hobby for us so we had a recent photo printed on canvas which added interest to the wall.

Final Thoughts

You need to reconcile yourself with the mess in remodeling. It is just a part of the process and you have to remember the end result will be worth it. Sometimes you will run into obstacles which are just not expected and you have to work through them. This happened with us, but I am very glad we updated our bathroom.. Remodeling is definitely a time to practice patience. When we were finished, one of our kids said, "Wow, this looks like a 5-star bathroom!" We knew then, the mess, obstacles and inconvenience had been well worth it!

There is such a sense of satisfaction when you finish a project of which you are well pleased. It defiantly facilitates motivation to do more.
